I read with awe a story in yesterday’s issue of The New Times about a 24-year old man in Gatsibo District who is suspected to have killed his own mother. 

It is so disturbing that the suspect now under police custody could have used a hoe to kill his own mother! It is so painful and disgusting! What could make a man go to such an extent?

I request police to carry out thorough investigations to establish the motive. According to the suspect’s father, the accused was suffering from a mental disorder.

Why didn’t the family take preventive action? Once somebody develops a mental problem, they should be confined to a specialised mental facility before they do harm to the rest of the society, as was the case this time. The family of Modeste Hitamungu is in my prayers.
