GISOZI - Teachers should pay attention to the specific requirements of both male and female students to create a favourable teaching and learning environment, an official with the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Rwanda chapter, said. 

Josephine Kobusingye Ruzindana, the FAWE Programme Officer in charge of scholarships and mentoring was speaking, yesterday, at the opening of a four-day workshop on gender responsive pedagogy at FAWE Girls' School at Gisozi.

"A friendly learning situation does  not only ensure good performance but also creates confidence, especially among female students.” Ruzindana said.

The workshop, which attracted the staff of two FAWE-run girl school (Gisozi and Gahini), is aimed at keeping the schools’ administration and teaching staff in the loop about FAWE`s mission of supporting girls and women to acquire education for development.

"Teachers will be trained on how to involve students in identifying their own problems and also be part in overcoming their challenges,” said Kobusingye.

She explained that they will also come up with strategies of protecting female students from being exploited by dubious characters through peer influence.

Addressing the media, the Secretary General of FAWE Rwanda Executive Committee, Eugenie Mukanoheli, said the training is relevant. "Last year we established another centre of excellence in Gahini.

Therefore, these new members and many others need to be informed about our mission and what is expected of them.”
