Following the success registered by the Nine Year Basic Education (9YBE), introduced about three years ago, the government has yet again launched another important programme – the 12-Year Basic Education (12YBE) that will see Rwandan children guaranteed education up to the completion of secondary school.

The government has an ambitious vision to transform Rwanda into a knowledge-based economy, and this cannot be achieved without ensuring that all Rwandan children are given opportunity to quality education.

The new programme will contribute enormously towards sustainable economic development as a strong human resource pool is a pillar to development.

There are many examples, including the so-called Asian Tigers, whose success story largely revolves around human resource development.

It is, therefore, imperative that Rwandans support this noble cause by contributing whatever they can to ensure that the required classrooms are completed well in time for the new academic year.

It will be upon our youths to seize the opportunity and study hard to develop themselves and their nation. Nonetheless, it’s important that our education system is designed to impart lessons and skills that will help the young generation create their own jobs once they are in the labour market.
