KACYIRU - The Rwanda National Police (RNP) and the Ministry of Health are set to establish new facilities at Kacyiru Police Hospital as the facility moves to expand on the medical services offered.

Speaking to The New Times, the hospital’s director, ACP. Dr. Daniel Nyamwasa, said that the construction of the new blocks at the hospital will kick off in October.

"We have a plan to upgrade this hospital to offer all services to patients from here,” Nyamwasa said.

Currently, the hospital which has a capacity of 40 sick-beds, admits only pregnant mothers. Nyamwasa said they intend to increase the bed capacity to 60.

The facelift will see the hospital introduce an HIV clinic and start admitting HIV patients.

"You can not put both sexes in the same room. GBV is about both male and female and we plan to have rooms for both patients where they will be admitted if the need arises,” he noted.

The expansion drive will see the hospital start performing surgeries and have a pediatric section.

"We want to upgrade the forensic medicine department, which helps police and prosecution to produce evidence. We still lack a lot and we hope in the future, we will be carrying out DNA tests,” Nyamwasa explained.

Currently, DNA tests are carried out in Germany.

"We are a referral hospital in GBV and forensic medicine, but we still lack infrastructure where to admit patients such as those with serious injuries.” He stated.

Kacyiru was established to provide medical, legal and psycho-social services such as counselling to victims of Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Currently, patients set for admission are referred to other hospitals.
