Kanombe Military Hospital will soon feature a rehabilitation centre for patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, fractures, intra-celebral bleeding and speech problems.

The facility is expected to be operational by the end of next year.

Dr Emmy Nkusi Agabe, a Neurosurgeon Consultant said that the establishment of the centre will be an opportunity to fortify healthcare service delivery in Rwanda.

"Back then, there were less chances of proper recovery due to inappropriate rehabilitation treatment but when the centre begins operating, patients will be certain of full recovery,” Nkusi, who is said to be the brains behind the centre said.

The physician added that after the centre is fully operational, it will take less time for patients to recover since the hospital will hire full-time specialists.

He added that the hospital is presently working on the structural design and staffing.

According to Nkusi, the whole process will cost over US$4m.

"Staff will include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists and social workers,” said Nkusi.

He said that they are in the process of sending some medics to train as occupational and speech therapists, who are expected to work at the centre.

Dr Nkusi also said that they would outsource expatriates to train more Rwandans as specialists in the necessary fields.
