GATSIBO- The Mayor of Gatsibo District, Ambrose Ruboneza has explained that Rwf110 million which was reported to have been unaccounted for was used to put up a modern school and pay workers’ salaries.
In his 2009/2010 report presented to Parliament, the Auditor General, Obadiah Biraro, indicated that Rwf110 million in Gatsibo district was unaccounted for.
The money, according to the AG, was earmarked for the education sector, but was withdrawn from the education account and transferred to the district’s operational bank account, without the approval of the District Advisory Council.
According to AG’s report, there were no efforts by the district to establish what the funds were utilised for after they were deposited on the operational account without any support documents.
But speaking to reporters over the weekend, Ruboneza, explained that a district team set up to investigate how the missing funds were utilized found the money was channelled to other developmental activities in the district that required urgent attention.
According to the Mayor, Rwf23million was used to pay district employees; Rwf7m was used to construct Kiziguro sector offices while the remaining Rwf80m was used to construct a modern school in the district.
"The probe team found out that this money was used in other activities but later credited to the education account. It is clear that the money was not embezzled,” he said.
