The who’s who of world cinema was present at Kwetu Film Institute for the grand opening ceremony of the 7th edition of Rwanda film festival.

Alongside the spectacular ceremony held at Kwetu Film Institute in Gaculiro, on July 23, was the inauguration of Kwetu Film Institute.

The event began at 5:30pm with a brief and exclusive launch of the school, while the official launch of the 7th edition of Rwanda film festival kicked off at 6pm.

In attendance were eight American delegates from the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Science: Phil Alden Robinson, Carol Littleton, Willie Burton, Lee Daniels, Stephanie, Alfre Woodard, Wynn Thomas and John Bailey, who held a press conference with local journalists shortly before the ceremony started.

Besides the red carpet reception, the event was accompanied by entertainment by Rwanda’s traditional dancer troupe, Amarebe – courtesy of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) and a cocktail. The event also showcased an exclusive Art Exhibition by local artists.

However, the first part of the festival that started on July 16 - 29, is considered as a major part of the Rwanda Film Festival, since it involves taking local films to Rwandan villages and hills, thus taking the film industry closer to the people.

The opening ceremony highlighted the success throughout Hillywood and three films: "Africa United”, "Nawewe” and "East Africa, its time” were screened.

Also in attendance was the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Protais Mitali, who was the chief guest and John Gara, the CEO of Rwanda Development Board (RDB), among other dignitaries.

According to Eric Kabera, the founder of the Rwanda Cinema Centre, it was a great opportunity to have high-profile celebrities within the film industry world-wide teach local students at the Kwetu Film Institute.

Founded by Kabera, the Kwetu Film institute (KFI) is a separate unit of the Rwanda Cinema Centre. The KFI provides important outlets for students seeking to gain experience in film making.
