KIGALI - A group of 50 inmates at Kigali Central Prison¬ popularly known as 1930 were, last Friday, awarded certificates after completing an extensive training seminar in management and leadership.

The three-week programme was organised by the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) in partnership with the management of the 1930 Prison.

Participants acquired skills on how to become visionary leaders and good governance.

They were also trained on how government institutions can form partnerships with Non Governmental Organisations to bolster the country’s development.

Jacques Muhigira, who spoke on behalf of the trainees said: "This seminar was so fruitful because it has enabled us to critically understand how we can draw our own action plans when we leave prison life”.

He said that the workshop will help them to work with other government authorities in promoting good governance in their respective communities after serving their sentences.

Muhigira asked the Correctional Service to organise similar trainings in other prisons across the country, saying this will enable them to become better citizens and improve their living standards.

Odette Nyirabahire, an official from the service who presided over the awarding of certificates urged the beneficiaries to pass on the acquired knowledge to their colleagues.

"I encourage you to extend the knowledge and skills you have acquired from this workshop to your colleagues who did not attend it and to make use of it in your daily lives,” she said.

She urged them to avoid being a burden to the country and instead play a key role in the ongoing transformation process. 

According to officials, the workshop is the third of its kind and has so far benefitted over 150 inmates.
