Man killed in Akagera Buffalo attack

Kayonza - A man was attacked and critically injured by a buffalo while fixing a fence along Akagera National Park, on Friday.Alphonse Bizimana, died from Nyagatare hospital where he was receiving treatment. The idea to fence the park was developed following constant attacks on the people and their property from the park animals.

Kayonza - A man was attacked and critically injured by a buffalo while fixing a fence along Akagera National Park, on Friday.

Alphonse Bizimana, died from Nyagatare hospital where he was receiving treatment.

The idea to fence the park was developed following constant attacks on the people and their property from the park animals.

The deceased was a resident of Juru village in Gahini Sector of Kayonza District.

Edward Ruburika, the Executive Secretary of Gahini Sector, confirmed the incident.He said that areas along the park are dangerous.

"The man suffered serious injuries after a buffalo charged at him...he later died. He was among the workers that are fixing a fence along the national park. The incident calls for immediate action to protect the workers,” he said.

Eugene Mutangana, the Akagera Park Chief Warden, told The Sunday Times that security precautions have been taken to protect the workers.

"We had a meeting yesterday, and we are going to do all it takes to protect the workers...I am sure there won’t be any more deaths,” he said.

At least 450 men are employed to fix the fence along the park.
