GICUMBI - Police in Gicumbi District, yesterday, set ablaze an assortment of illegal local brew worth over Rwf6 million, seized from smugglers.

Police said the items were impounded from the border sectors of Kaniga and Rubaya after they were smuggled into the country.

The liquor, branded under various names, included 3,400 litres of crude waragi (Kanyanga) and 60 packets of chief waragi.

Addressing local leaders who turned up to witness the exercise, the new District Police Commander (DPC) Supt. Evereste Gatera, urged them to always report illicit brew dealers and drug traffickers to local authorities.

"These banned drinks are harmful to human health, you should cooperate with security organs to apprehend those who smuggle them,” said Gatera.

Gatera reminded local leaders of their role in sensitising residents to desist from consuming illegal brew, which he said poses a high security risk.

According to the Police, the majority of domestic violence cases reported in the area are attributed to the consumption of illicit drinks.
