KIGALI - A local NGO, Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa (BCIEA), Wednesday, trained 71 students from Akilah Institute for Women on prevention of breast cancer.

The training aimed at creating awareness on early detection of the disease so as to seek medical attention as well as encourage regular medical examination.

One of the trainees, Florence Mukangenzi, told The New Times that this was a good opportunity for her.

"We have been informed about the causes but the most important thing is to seek medical attention so that the disease can be diagnosed early,” she said.

Mukangenzi promised to sensitise other women on the possibility of an infection so as to seek early medical check-up.

The Director of Admissions at the Institute, Carol Rugege, appreciated the NGO`s initiative calling upon the trainees to put into practice the skills acquired.

"Some students had never got any skills about preventing the disease but this has given them a foundation,” Rugege said.

The founder and director of BCIEA, Philippa Kibugu Decuir, noted that creating awareness or educating women about preventive measures against breast cancer would help them to take personal responsibility.
