GICUMBI - Residents of Byumba town, Gicumbi District have expressed dismay over the lack of street lights.
Some of the residents who spoke to The New Times, said lack of lights on city streets was a source of insecurity.
"You get so scared when it reaches to 7 pm because the whole city streets become so dark and very risky for pedestrians,” said Evereste Ntawukuriryayo, a businessman.
Rose Uwamariya, another area resident, explained that street lighting is important to prevent crimes like theft and murder.
According to the residents, three people were previously killed by unknown assailants, which they attributed to lack of street lighting.
District Mayor, Bonane Nyangenzi, said the issue is under consideration by local authorities and installation of street lights is in the process.
"We are already installing street lights but we also ask residents to put security lights on their houses,” said Nyangenzi, adding that the move will prevent crimes that have been occurring at night.
Police also stressed that street lights were vital to maintain security.
"Most of the theft cases happen at night because the wrong doers take advantage of darkness. Availability of lights would at least reduce such crimes,” Police said.
