Editor,
I read with disappointment the news in yesterday’s issue of The NewTimes headlined: "180 fail to declare wealth”. The civil servants are reported to have refused to declare their wealth to the office of the Ombudsman, despite repeated pleas.
Not many months ago, the Ministry of Labour and Public service cracked the whip on civil servants who failed to declare their wealth in time. Some of them were accused of under declaration.
In the public eye, this is the last thing you would expect of civil servants who are supposed to implement government policies and always bide by the law. It is indeed a shocking scenario.
Some are said to be senior government officials, who are supposed to lead by example and be role models to the society at large.
I, therefore, ask the office of the Ombudsman and the Ministry of Labour and Public service to take appropriate action against anybody who failed to declare their wealth on time.
