The government’s decision to increase the capacity of local construction firms to boost their competitiveness and increase the industry’s contribution towards the country’s infrastructural development is indeed a productive move.

If supported, the local firms will be able to compete with foreign companies in bidding for tenders. Most of these firms lack financial capacity and they end up losing lucrative deals to foreign companies.

Like the Minister of Infrastructure, Albert Nsengiyumva, rightly put it, the local firms lack access to finance and are always not in position to buy the required modern equipment used in road construction.

Also, local firms should be paid on time.

If well supported, the firms should improve the quality of their work. Shoddy work has no room in today’s Rwanda.
