The announcement, last week, by the Ministry of Agricultural and Animal Resources regarding increased tea prices is exciting news for farmers.  The prices will see the farmers generate more profits, therefore improving on their welfare.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Agnes Kalibata, the new prices were arrived at after a meeting between the farmers and consumers. 

I want to suggest that such meetings that involve all stakeholders are held on a regular basis, to evaluate how the business is evolving and to make sure that farmers earn what they deserve.

There are tendencies where agents or middle men buy produce from the farmers at low rates and sell at much higher prices, with the profits not trickling down to the farmers or their communities.

Through intervention of the government, I believe that such cases will be minimized.
