Rural women urged on income generating projects

RWAMAGANA — Women living in rural areas have been urged to undertake income generating activities to improve their economic status.

The call was made by MP Eugenie Kabageni,during celebrations to mark International Women’s Day in Musha sector. District, sector leaders, Parliamentarians and hundreds of residents attended the function.

Kabageni, also President of Commission for Gender in the Lower Chamber of Parliament said, "We appreciate what you have so far achieved, but you need to exploit the funds available for you in banks to foster further development."

Responding to the women’s concern over lack of capital and training, Kabageni told women that the government has guaranteed funds in the National Bank to enable women get loans.

"We face challenges of lack of funds to finance our projects. We therefore appeal for training and for funds to finance our developmental projects," Odette Nyirarukundo president of cooperative Duterimbere, said in a memorandum read to the visiting team earlier in the day, while touring several women cooperatives operating in Musha and Munyiginya sectors.

Valens Ntezirembo, the district mayor, promised to avail women a documentary film showing several projects. He expressed optimism that women would learn much from such documentaries.

During the celebrations, pupils staged competitions demonstrating how domestic violence can be weeded out in society and winners went home with prizes.

Musha Primary School won dance and drama competitions and was awarded Frw30.000, while poem recitation and cartoon drawing were won by single individuals, Ntayiziyiki, and Musabyimana, that also attracted Frw30,000 each in prizes.
