Rubavu District Mayor, Sheikh Hassan Bahame has called on residents of Busasamana sector to be more vigilant following a spate of murders in the area by armed gangs suspected to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In March this year, a local leader from Rusaru village in Busasamana sector Jean Pierre Bizimana, was allegedly gunned down together with his father by unknown assailants thought to hail from DRC.
In a related incident, this month, a group of armed people raided the residence of Agnes Nyirasafari, the head of Kyamabuye cell in same sector.
They allegedly shot at her house several times and threw a grenade inside the house but, luckily, the device never exploded and injuries were reported.
During a security meeting with Busasamana residents on Thursday, the mayor cautioned residents against conspiring with the attackers.
"We cannot tolerate people who cause insecurity in our area, more so
targeting innocent leaders and putting our development at risk,” said
Sheikh Bahame.
"Some have parents, friends and relatives in Busasamana, so there is
constant communication flowing but its time you advised them to
stop this act and instead return home,” added Bahame.
Gasper Gasimba, a leader of Nyacyonga cell in the same sector admitted that local leaders are living in fear as they are clear targets.
"Our colleagues have been targeted while others are killed; so we are also
in fear,” said Gasimba.
Gasimba mentioned a notorious rebel nicknamed ‘Kidugudu’ as the main suspect. He is said to be Rwandan but serves in the Congolese army.
