RWANDA’s medal hopeful Epiphanie Nyirabarame finished outside the medal bracket in the 5th CISM World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The two-time Olympian finished sixth in the 42.125km full marathon race after clocking two hours, 51 minutes and 58 seconds, a massive 16 minutes and 36 seconds adrift of Korea DPR’s Kim Kum who won gold.

Nyirabarame could not even march her personal best 2:33:59.

China’s Wei Yanan and Johannes Helaria of Namibia took silver and bronze respectively.

The country’s slim chances now rest on the shoulders of 5000m and 10000m specialist Claudette Mukasakindi and Eric Sebahire who will compete in the 5000m category.

The trio is using the games to prepare for the 10th All Africa Games due in Maputo, Mozambique in September.

In 2004, Dieudonne Disi won silver while competing in the cross country championship.

About 4,900 athletes are taking part in the Military Games.
