MUHANGA- Police in Muhanga has warned motorcycle taxi operators (Taxi-moto) over the increasing cases of misconduct that lead to accidents and insecurity in the district.

The District Police Commander, Spt Jean d’Dieu Gashiramanga cautioned the operators while addressing the association of motorbike operators in Muhanga, yesterday.

The meeting discussed security, accidents and misconduct of motor cyclists; which include lack of permits, uniforms, identifications, and unauthorized parking, among others.

Disrespect for traffic regulations and ignoring the police when stopped were also highlighted.

"This trend of violating the laws must come to an end. Strict measures will be taken on motorbike transporters who don’t abide,” Gashiramanga said.

He noted that most motorbike operators have been involved in many activities which have caused insecurity on the roads and in public in recent days.

"There is a great need for full cooperation of all members. Association leaders should come up with a self regulation mechanism of its members in order to uphold security of people and lives,” Gashiramanga added.

The head of association of motorbike operators, Aimable Dusenge, stated that motor cyclists are willing to closely work with the Police but some association members have been law defaulters due to delayed delivery of road user licenses from Police.

"Our members are not rebels and are willing to work for the development of the community as it has been in past. We need the support of the police to clear some unresolved issues, such as lack of permits,” Dusenge said.

Over 120 motorbikes are currently being held at Nyamabuye police station since last year and recent operations netted over 50 motorbikes.
