Nyirabarame starts medal quest in Rio

TWO-TIME Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame joins elite athletes in battle for silverware in today’s marathon race at the 5th CISM Military World Games which kicked off yesterday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Nyirabarame running under Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) face an uphill task against Kenya’s Winfred Kwamboka, Lebotha Lineo from Lesotho and Tanzania’s Jackline Sakilu on the African continent.

Other women athletes lined up for the women include Brazilian duo of Denise Campos and De Jesus Gisele, Canada’s Karen Kaizer, Luo Chan and Wei Yanan from China, Schindler Cornelia from Germany and Drazdauskaite Rasa from Lithuania.

Others include Monika Drybulska from Poland, Kim Kam Ok from South Korea and Hellen Willix from Sweden.

Rwanda’s athletes in the Games include Claudette Mukasakindi, who will compete in 5000m and 10000m on Wednesday and Friday respectively while Eric Sebahire will compete in 5000m also on Friday.

The trio is using the military games to prepare for the 2012 London Olympic Games as well as the forthcoming All Africa Games due in Maputo, Mozambique in September.

Dieudonne Disi, who is not taking part in the Games, won silver in the 2004 edition competing in the cross country championship and finished sixth in the 2006 where he took part in the 12km race.
