NYAGATARE- Seven students from Gacundezi Secondary School in Nyagatare District are in custody after spearheading a strike.

The students, last Friday, allegedly broke windows, chairs and other property because of insufficient teachers.

A source from the school who spoke to The New Times, said that the strike was led by a group of 11 Senior Three candidates.

"Students especially those in Senior Three complained of lack of teachers but the school administration did not attend to their complaints,” one student said on condition of anonymity for fear being reprimanded.

Police arrived at the school after an alert from an area resident.

"We were tipped off by a neighbor of the school who said that students were smashing windows with stones. The school administration was not aware (of the incident) by then,” a police official said.

"They were over 140 students who went on strike but we have so far arrested seven who are presently detained at Rwimiyaga Police Post.”

When The New Times visited the school on Wednesday morning, the situation was back to normal and students were in class.

Attempts to get a comment from the school’s head teacher, Bishop Gakumba were futile as he could not answer his mobile phone.
