Police in Rubavu are holding a minerals’ smuggler who allegedly attempted to bribe them to have his goods proceed to Kigali.

Kanizius Ndabukiye, was arrested with wolfram and other minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

"We know that they dodge police through the porous border but we lay traps along the Gisenyi-Kigali highway. We seized 4.3 tonnes of minerals,” said Jean Claude Kayeye, from Revenue Protection Department (RPD).

When Ndabukiye was stopped at a road block, he did not have licenses permitting him to trade in minerals; neither did he possess clearance documents from the Rwanda Revenue Authority.

"He was honest and admitted he had smuggled the minerals that’s when he offered us US$100 to release him,” added Kayeye.

"When he realised we were not giving in, he increased his offer to US$300.”

The police encourages all its officers to desist from all kinds of temptation that would demean their professionalism and integrity.
