Police is holding three men from Kimironko Sector, Gasabo District in connection with smuggled goods from Burundi.

The Revenue Protection Unit (RPD), arrested Emmanuel Ngirabakunzi, Innocent Habumugisha and Innocent Ndayishimiye on Monday night as they off-loaded the smuggled merchandise.

The goods include 21 crates of Amstel Bock beer and polythene bags worth over Frw500, 000. The intercepted goods were hidden in charcoal bags.

It is alleged that the suspects attempted to bribe the officers with Frw320, 000 to set them free.

He urged truck owners to monitor how their vehicles are used, saying that some drivers load contraband on trucks that mainly transport transit products.

He noted that measures had been put in place to deal with smuggling and corruption tendencies.

If convicted, the suspects may face up to 15 years in prison, fines and confiscation of the truck and goods.
