A delegation from the Burundian Office of the Ombudsman, yesterday, visited the Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD); a local NGO that advocates for the fight against corruption and injustice, especially land related.

Officials said the visit aimed at learning how civil society organisations like RISD can work hand-in-hand with the office of the Ombudsman to fight injustice.

The Director of RISD, Annie Kairaba, showcased the NGO’s activities carried out in close partnership with the Ombudsman’s Office.

"We create awareness on various issues including the land law, training mediators on handling land disputes as well as helping the population to know their rights among others,” Kairaba said.

She explained that as part of the civil society, working with the office of the Ombudsman greatly contributed to transparency, justice and trust-building especially, during the current land reform exercise.

Led by the Deputy Ombudsman, Bernadette Kanzayire, the delegation held an interactive session to discuss progress on various policies related to land ownership.

Addressing the media shortly after the meeting, the Director of Cabinet in the Burundian office of the Ombudsman, Donavine Niyongabire, commended RISD for its commitment and good working relationship with the Ombudsman.
