Athletes in Brazil for World Military Games

TWO-TIME Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame will lead the country’s charge at this week’s 5th World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nyirabarame, who will compete in the half marathon, will also use the games to fine-tune herself ahead of the upcoming 10th All Africa Games in Maputo as well as next year’s Olympic Games.

TWO-TIME Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame will lead the country’s charge at this week’s 5th World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Nyirabarame, who will compete in the half marathon, will also use the games to fine-tune herself ahead of the upcoming 10th All Africa Games in Maputo as well as next year’s Olympic Games.

Eric Sebahire will run in 5000m, Gervais Hakizimana will compete in 3000m steeplechase while Claudette Mukasakindi will compete in two races; 5000m and 10,000m.

In the 2004 Military Games, Dieudonne Disi won silver in the cross country championship.

The 5th Military World Games will run from July 16-24 and are expected to attract over 4,900 athletes competing in 24 sporting disciplines.

The games take place every four years, in the year preceding the Summer Olympic Games. The first competition was held in Rome, in 1995.
