Genocide survivors in Muhanda sector said that the reburial relieves their hearts of the pain, and restores the dignity of their fallen families and friends.

"We have struggled for many years just to see this day come. We are grateful for the support given and our hearts are now relieved of the pain of seeing our relatives buried in poor conditions,” one survivor said.

The survivors also thanked the local leaders and the Rubaya Tea Factory for their moral and financial support towards the burial. They noted there is renewed hope due to the government’s supportive policies towards unity and reconciliation.

Most of the killings in Muhanda zone were carried out by the Ex-FAR soldiers of the then government, who had camped near the Gishwati Forest, according to survivors.

 "The number of people killed at the time was big and most of them have not been recovered,” one survivor said.

Damien Nyabyenda, who officiated at the ceremony, encouraged the residents to speak the truth about what happened during the genocide and provide more information about the whereabouts of some of the victims’ remains.

Participants at the event also made a three kilometre peaceful march in commemoration of the victims and to denounce genocide in Rwanda. The event was attended by various members of parliament and local leaders in the area.
