KAYONZA/MUSANZE-The Ministry of Education, yesterday, awarded Friesian cows to teachers across the country who performed exceptionally well in their schools. At least six teachers from each of the seven districts of the Eastern and Northern Provinces received the reward.
KAYONZA/MUSANZE-The Ministry of Education, yesterday, awarded Friesian cows to teachers across the country who performed exceptionally well in their schools.
At least six teachers from each of the seven districts of the Eastern and Northern Provinces received the reward.
According to Charles Namara, the Director of Education in Kayonza District, the teachers were selected based on how their pupils performed in the national examinations.
"We are giving them the cows that will, no doubt, motivate them to do better,” he said.
He added that the teachers deserved credit for transforming young children into good responsible citizens.
Joseline Mukasekuru, a teacher at Nyabubare Primary School in Kayonza District, said she hoped to uplift her family’s living standards after receiving the cow.
The teacher, who has been in service for six years, said her husband would provide the resources needed to sustain the cow.
"I knew I was on the list of the beneficiaries, so I made some important preparations to accommodate the cow. My husband and I, will work together to maximise milk production,” she said.
Godifois Harerimana, a teacher at Nyagahandagaza Primary School noted that the cows would offer extra income and motivation to teachers.
"This is what teachers need... concern for their wellbeing and retirement. I have been serving for the last 45 years and can now afford a smile, as I prepare to retire,” he said.
Meanwhile, during the handover ceremony of the cows to Musanze teachers, an education official, Ematha Kabatesi, said that the Ministry of Education would reward a total of 120 primary and secondary school teachers over the next two months.
"It’s motivation and also support to the welfare of teachers; this program will reach out to many teachers. It’s also a call to teachers to offer quality education and ensure proper upbringing of students. Their discipline lies within their responsibility’’ Kabatesi said.
Teachers commended the ministry for such initiatives aimed at empowering them especially economically.
"I was selected because over 80 percent of the students passed with a distinction in my subject. I have been supporting orphans in the area, encouraging parents to send their children to school, I thank every one for supporting and recognising my humble work,’’ Florence Nyiramana.
