GASABO - The Vice mayor of Gasabo District in charge of social affairs, Marie Louise Uwimana, has disclosed that a modern health centre will be constructed in Remera sector, Gasabo District.

In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Uwimana said that the construction works of the facility are scheduled to last six months, beginning end July.

"The main objective for constructing this health centre is to promote health services in the area because Remera sector currently does not have a public health centre,” Uwimana said.

She said that the centre, which will be constructed at a cost of about Rwf665m, is funded by Belgium Technical Cooperation (BTC), adding that upon completion, it will have the capacity to handle over 200 patients a day.

The official noted that the construction of the health centre is in line with the district’s plans to extend health facilities to all residents in the entire district.

"Its good news for us to have our own health centre because we have been trekking long distances to seek medical treatment at Kimironko Health Centre,” said Christine Uwimbabazi, a resident of Remera.

Alex Kagaba, another resident said: "I thank the district for this great initiative and I am optimistic that this facility will solve the challenges of overcrowding of patients at nearby health centres.”

The Vice mayor further added that next year, the district authorities, in collaboration with the City of Kigali, will construct other health centres in Kimihurura and Gatsata sectors.

She also revealed that the district plans to introduce maternity services at the Rwanda Women Network Health Centre in Kinyinya, and one in Rusororo.
