GISOZI - EMC Corporation, a global Information Communication Technology (ICT) organisation based in Turkey, Tuesday, donated US$15,000 to the Rwanda Genocide Archive at the Kigali Memorial Centre.

The donation will go towards the creation of a unified digital repository to digitise, protect and index records to increase the public’s accessibility to the history of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Receiving the donation, Solange Umulisa, the Deputy Director of Aegis Trust Rwanda, said that the donation will support in digitising the genocide archive.

"The archive will contain audiovisual testimonies, historical photographs, documents, newspapers’ and testimonies from genocide victims,” she noted.

Umulisa stated that EMC’s heritage donation observes the importance of the fight against Genocide and sheds light on the value of information technology today, for the preservation of the historic documents.

"We appreciate EMC’s commitment to Genocide Archive Rwanda and their support to our efforts to digitise an important piece of Rwanda’s history,” she added.

Mohammed Amin, EMC’s Senior Vice President and General Manager EMC Turkey, Emerging Africa and Middle East, stressed his company’s commitment to rollout appropriate technology in the markets where they operate.

"We awarded the Rwanda Genocide Archive because of the audience it receives and reaches; therefore, we wanted to support the institution towards protecting and preserving the invaluable cultural information through digitisation, allowing readily accessible online research and education,” he explained.

Amin added that to re-enforce EMC’s commitment to the enablement of ICT in Rwanda, EMC is closely working with the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology and Rwanda Development Board (RDB).

"We are proud to collaborate with such reputable institutions such as the Genocide Archive Rwanda, RDB and KIST who have made technology the cornerstone in their respective efforts,” he noted.

Speaking at the event, Patrick Nyirishema, Head of ICT at RDB hailed EMC for recognising and supporting the Rwanda Genocide Archive.

Established by Aegis Trust in association with Rwanda’s National Commission for the Fight against Genocide (CNLG), the Genocide Archive of Rwanda will become the unified repository for all information relating to the Genocide.

EMC aims at enabling businesses and service providers to transform their operations and deliver IT as a service. It operates in 157 countries around the world.
