Through the Students Club for Unity and Reconciliation (SCUR), Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) winded up its activities for the liberation week.

The week saw sensitization campaigns against genocide ideology and creating awareness of the country`s past as well as enlightening students on their expected role in rebuilding the country among others.

As part of the activities, students visited Murambi genocide memorial site.

"There is need for the youth to devise means of sustaining peace,” the head of SCUR-KIE, Pierre Ndayambaje said.

He told reporters that the visit aimed at educating students about the tragedy that engulfed the country during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi particularly in Murambi.

Speaking to The New Times, some of the students expressed concern and condemned the then church and local leaders for coordinating the Interahamwe militia to kill innocent people.

"This teaches me a lesson that I also have to pass on to make sure there can never be genocide again in this country,” Phoebe Mushimiyamana, one of the students said.

The 3rd year student called upon her colleagues from other academic institutions to take lead in sensitizing against genocide ideology not only at schools, but also in their communities.
