RWAMAGANA-Innocent Rutabingwa, a businessman, is in Gahini hospital with serious head injuries after being assaulted by five people.

Residents of Kayonza town stared in disbelief at a blood stained floor of Mahumbezi bar and Sauna on Thursday.

"It appeared up to 5 people were involved in the attack which happened in Kayonza trading centre on the 35-year-old,” said Chief Inspector of Police, Richard Rubagumya, Kayonza District Police Commander (DPC).

The DPC added that the main suspect, Content Ruganji, who owns JACANA bar in Kabarondo and JACANA Restaurant in Kayonza, is on the run.

"Content Ruganji acted in a very cruel manner that led to serious injuries on his victim”.

"At this stage we do not know what started this row. However, once the victim fell on the ground it appeared he was set upon by numerous people and kicked in the head and body a number of times."

According to Doctor Patient Bashirwa Kajibwami, the victim was still admitted at the hospital with serious eye injuries, but they were not thought to be life threatening.

Rutabingwa, said the two had disagreements on how to share electricity bills of a commercial house they co-rent.

He said that the level of conflict was too childish to push Ruganji into inhuman action against him.

"He came wielding a machete towards me...I thought it was a joke. He was later joined by 4 of his employees, who pushed me on the ground. Ruganji cut me on the right eye and I started bleeding seriously. His workers descended on me, hitting me with sticks and bricks,” he said.

David Gakuba, the Chairman of Kayonza District businesspersons, condemned the incident and called for immediate action to bring the culprit to book.

He said that Ruganji’s action sets a very bad precedence, especially as he was one of the leaders of the business community.
