KIGALI - Lycee de Kigali Secondary School (LDK) has embarked on a project to construct a memorial centre in honour of its students and teachers killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The monument will also act as a documentation centre on the Genocide.

Speaking to The New Times on phone yesterday, the headmaster of the school, Martin Masabo, said they plan to equip the memorial with information on the Rwandan Genocide and other genocides.

"Our plan is that the memorial becomes an education reference for other schools in the country and beyond. They will be coming here to study about the Genocide,” said Masabo.

He, however, appealed for more funding from partners  due to the projected high cost that presently lies at about Rwf 16.5 million.

"The money needed to come up with the memorial is beyond our means; so, we are calling upon partners and other well wishers to help us realise this cause,” he said. 

Masabo clarified that they already have permission from the National Commission for the Fight against the Genocide (CNLG) to put up the memorial and display photos of the victims of the Genocide alongside information concerning them.

He called upon agencies such as the CNLG, IBUKA, and Never Again Rwanda to supply the centre with all the necessary information about the Genocide.

The memorial is expected to be fully functional during the 2012 Genocide commemoration week.
