APR’s hopes of retaining the Cecafa Kagame Cup hang in a balance after yesterday’s 3-1 Group C defeat against St. George at Jamhuri stadium.
The result justified why the defending champions grumbled after being drawn with last year’s finalists in the preliminary round.
On the other hand, it was sweet revenge for the Ethiopians who lost out to APR (1-2) in last year’s final.
In Group C’s other match, Kenya’s Ulinzi hammered Ports of Djibouti 9-0 to go top. Ulinzi and St. George are tied on four points but the Kenyans enjoy a superior goal difference.
APR, who dropped to third place after yesterday’s defeat now have to beat Ulinzi tomorrow to qualify for the quarter finals.
St.George also wind up their group campaign against minnows Ports.
In Group B, Ugandan champions Bunamwaya and El-Mereikh of Sudan played out a 1-all draw while Tanzania’s Yanga beat Elman of Somalia 2-0.
Action continues today with two matches in Group A.
Red Sea take on Burundi’s Vital O’ while Etincelles, which is already eliminated from the tourney after losing their first two games, wind up their campaign with a tie against Tanzania’s Simba.
