MALABO - Prime Minister Bernard Makuza, yesterday, arrived in Malabo Equatorial Guinea’s capital, to attend the 17th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government summit.

The two-day summit will focus on building the capacity of African youth and sustainable development.

Upon arrival at Malabo International Airport, Makuza was received by his Guinean counterpart, Ignacio Milam and Rwanda’s Ambassador to Ethiopia and AU, Joseph Nsengimana.

The summit, which kicks off today, will be preceded by a meeting of the 25th New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC) scheduled today.

The NEPAD session will be held under the theme; ‘Mobilising domestic resources for NEPAD implementation’.

Dr Ibrahim Assane Mayaki will deliver a key statement titled ‘NEPAD – the Journey So Far’, through which he will also update African leaders on the steady progress being made in the implementation of the NEPAD programmes in areas such as agriculture and infrastructure, 10 years after its establishment.

Tomorrow, the summit will kick off under the theme "Accelerating Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development”, during which leaders will discuss the future of African youth and their role in sustainable development for the continent.

The meeting is also expected to review and approve the resolutions of the 19th meeting of the AU Council of Ministers and also decide the venue for the next session.

The President of Equatorial Guinea , Teodore Obiang Nguema, is the current chair of the AU.
