The management of the Fund for Support to Genocide Survivors (FARG) has announced that it has so far spent over Rwf 18.1 billionn on its beneficiaries since the beginning of the year.

Addressing journalists at the fund's headquarters yesterday, the FARG Executive Secretary, Theophile Ruberangeyo, said that most of the funds were allocated to survivors’ education, health care, social assistance (direct support), income generating activities and shelter.

"This year, we spent over Rwf 13.9 billion on 53,870 students in primary, secondary, technical vocational schools and university,” he stated.

Ruberangeyo reiterated their commitment in ensuring that the assistance goes to the right beneficiaries, underscoring their campaign to verify the fund's database.

He mentioned that FARG spent Rwf 500m on medical insurance cover for over 148,000 survivors through Mutuelle de santé, adding that some survivors on special treatment were given medical attention outside the country .

"Rwf 800 million was given as a direct support to 24,460 survivors, over Rwf 916 was spent to start income generating activities for 2,257 survivors and Rwf 2 billion was used in the construction of 3,222 houses for survivors," he explained.

The FARG Executive Secretary said that despite their assistance to needy survivors, the challenge was the ever increasing number of beneficiaries in all sectors, students who drop out after secondary level and complicated health cases.

He said that FARG plans to increase the number of students in the Technical Vocational and Education Training program as a way of equipping young survivors with technical skills.
