NYABIHU - Following last week’s sudden death of the former Mayor of Nyabihu District, Jean Baptiste Nsengiyunva, plans are underway to elect a new leader.

"Every three months following an election, there is a review to assess if there are vacant posts, and if they do exist, elections are conducted to fill the vacancy,” said Celestin Kabahizi, the Governor of Western Province.

Nsengiyunva, 39, is reported to have complained of chest pains prior to his death. And the post mortem results reveal cardiac arrest as the cause of his death months into his five-year mandate.

The Governor also said that the electoral process requires that the District Advisory Council first elects a councillor to replace the fallen Mayor before the District Collegiate elects the new Mayor.
 
Meanwhile, Angelle Mukaminani, the Vice Mayor in charge of finance and economic development is the acting Mayor .

Nsengiyunva, a former lecturer at Kigali Institute of Science and Technology-KIST, was elected to lead the district during the recent local government elections.

"The former Mayor was focused on development. He acted without fear or favour and his decisions were quick and accurate,” added Kabahizi.
