RULINDO - As part of its support to the ongoing tree planting campaign in the country, telecom giant MTN Rwanda, last week, initiated a nursery bed of one million trees in Rulindo District.

The preparation of the nursery bed in Bushoki sector was part of MTN’s 21 days of Y’ello Care, an initiative that is in line with the governments green and clean environment program.

Speaking to The New Times shortly after the tree planting ceremony, the MTN Rwanda CEO, Khaled Mikkawi said: "The main objective for organising this nursery bed is to help Rulindo District to get enough trees to plant in the surrounding forests.”
 
He noted that during the Y’ello Care, MTN staff also planted 3,300 trees in six sites around Kigali City, adding that they also participated in installing water tanks donated to two schools in the city.

"As a corporate company, participating in the country’s developmental activities is imperative because that is one of the ways of appreciating our esteemed customers,” Mikkawi added.

He pointed out that MTN also distributed 30 dustbins at hospitals and around market places in Kigali and constructed two energy saving cooking stoves at Gikondo rehabilitation centre and Musha Orphanage Centre.

The CEO noted that to further contribute to the global conservation efforts, MTN Rwanda will join its sister companies across Africa and the Middle East to plant 150,000 trees by December this year.

"I thank MTN for constructing terraces in the area because this will enable the farmers in the area to fight soil erosion especially during the rainy seasons,” David Maniriho, a Rulindo resident said.

The Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) Dr Rose Mukankomeje said: "It’s good for MTN to come up with such an initiative - leaving the offices to come and participate in the green and clean environment campaign.”

She called upon other business companies to contribute to the clean and green campaign in the country.
