KIGALI - Regional medical practitioners are in Kigali to attend an International Tuberculosis Infection Control Course.This will be the fourth regional program to be hosted in Rwanda, according to the coordinator of the regional centre on Programmatic Management of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (PMDT), Dr Rudoviko Ruhirwa.

He added that Rwanda is exemplary in managing cases of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis.

"Rwanda hosts the regional centre of excellence for PMDT. We also have three specialised units that focus on Drug Resistant Tuberculosis in the hospitals of Kabutare, Kibungo, and Kibagabaga,” said Ruhirwa.

He attributed this success to the government’s commitment to treat TB victims by providing them with drugs and making constant follow-up.

The Director of Tuberculosis Program in the Ministry of Health, Dr Michel Gasana, noted that there is an average of about 80 victims of Drug Resistant Tuberculosis who receive treatment every year in Rwanda.

He added that those who suffer from tuberculosis and receive treatment are within the range of 7,000 to 8,000 people annually.

Dr Gasana said that they have set up several measures to control and prevent tuberculosis infection.
