APR kick off their Kagame Cecafa Club Championship defense against Djibouti’s Ports Football Club in Morogoro-Tanzania this Sunday.
The military side, who wind up their Primus League campaign this afternoon against Marines, are expected to jet out Friday morning.
With the Primus league and Peace Cup titles in their bag, APR want a repeat of last season when they won a treble after lifting the regional title.
Etincelles, Rwanda’s other representatives, will open this year’s edition with a clash against Ocean Boys of Zanzibar.
12 teams from Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Djibouti and Zanzibar will compete in the two-week event that will be jointly held in Dar-es-Salaam and Morogoro.
The teams are divided in three groups: Group A has Tanzania’s Simba, Vital’O of Burundi, Etincelles and Ocean Boys.
Group B has Yanga of Tanzania, Sudan’s El-Mereikh, Ugandan champions Bunamwaya and Somalia’s El Man make up Group B while Group C pits APR against Ethiopia’s St. George, Kenya’s Ulinzi and Ports of Djibouti.
On top of President Kagame’s annual sponsorship package of ($60,000) Rwf60m, Tanzania Breweries Limited through their Castle Lager brand, have injected $100, 000 (Rwf 60m) in the tournament.
