We are all gifted with different natural talents and abilities that are meant to help us in one way or another in our day to day lives but do we really use them at all?

Truth is, few people in this world know their talents and abilities and even then, the people who have actually discovered their talents still do not know how to develop and use them.

This is because in most cases people are too busy looking in all the wrong places only to discover their talents a little bit too late.

Early in life children show personality trails and preferences for what they like and dislike and therefore they should at a tender age be encouraged to discover their talents so that by the time they get to adulthood they are sharpened and ready to face the world with talents as their armor.

But how do you encourage your child to discover their gifts and talents?

‘Train your child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from them,’ says Proverbs 22.6. Here are five ways to develop and nurture children’s talents and abilities.

Observe your child’s behavior to determine their interests and strengths. Once this is done try to figure out ways to help them, build on their abilities.

Find creative ways to allow children to begin using their talents.

Develop a family hobby that will involve the use of the children’s talents. This will not only increase children’s creative potential but also brings the family close.

Continue to find new expressive ways to help your child discover their area of interest through school, the arts theater and through physical exercise.Parents too should discover and develop their own talents as an example and encouragement for their children.

Helping children to discover what they are good at promotes healthy self esteem and is essential to their future success.

Wendy Mogul PH D psychologist says that many parents measure their own worth and effectiveness by their child’s success. However it should be noted that talents are not to be installed into children like software programmes in a computer.

Schools also provide a good foundation for talent discovery and development for children.

There are schools and academics that provide various objects exercises people and other necessary materials to help children discover where their talents lie and therefore develop them. But talents do not come with an owner’s manual.

Tapping talent is tapping potential and thus securing a bright future. Talents, gifts and abilities anyone can still have a life.
