KIGALI - The United Kingdom has commended Rwanda for its positive contribution to the region and Africa, saying that this can be attributed to the commitment of good leadership prevailing in the country.

This was said by Benedict Llewellyn Jones, the British High Commissioner to Rwanda, while addressing different diplomats and government offiials during an event to celebrate the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II over the weekend.

The British envoy cited the contribution of Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) in Darfur, the country’s commitment to regional integration and President Paul Kagame’s dynamic contribution to climate change solutions.

"We recognise the huge contribution Rwandan troops make in Darfur, President Kagame’s stance on issues like climate change and response to the UN Security Council’s to the crisis in Libya,” he said.

He also took note of Rwanda’s commitment  to ensure that the EAC becomes an effective trading body."We were also very pleased with the appointment of former minister Dr Richard Sezibera as Secretary General of the EAC.”

The envoy further noted that his government will continue to cooperate with Rwanda to ensure the eradication of poverty in the country.

"We believe that, by working closely with the government and the Rwandan people, we can together make a big difference in poverty alleviation and, together, achieve MDGs in Rwanda.”

He hailed the existing strong relationship between the two governments adding that what makes it effective is the country’s good leadership and commitment by government to achieve the MDGs .

Finance Minister John Rwangombwa who was the chief guest lauded the UK government its continued support to Rwanda, adding this signifies the cordial relationship between the two countries.

"Government appreciates the support that UK has been extending to Rwanda. The excellent relationship will help us achieve our MDGs and Rwanda will continue working with the UK government for the benefit of our people,” he noted.

Garry Page a British citizen who attended the event pointed out that it was prudent to celebrate the Queen’s birth day, adding that it makes her joyful.
