GISOZI - ESSI Secondary School in Nyamirambo ended a commemoration week by visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre to honour victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event started with a ‘Walk to Remember’ from the school premises to Onatracom Head Offices.

During the week, school administrators were involved in various activities aimed at, among other things,  to sensitize students about their role in fighting the Genocide ideology.

"We have the responsibility of encouraging survivors so that they can move on as well as helping others understand the country’s history,” said Khadidja Tumukunde, a student.

The school headmaster, Isaac Munyakazi, said that the annual program exposes students to reality about the Genocide.

"These students will effectively fight the Genocide ideology if they know very well what happened to our country in 1994,” Munyakanzi said.

He noted that it was equally important for other schools to adopt the system so as to build a combined effort in the struggle.

The school also organized a special function to honour students, teachers, administrators and other employees who were killed during the Genocide.

The Minister of Internal Security, Musa Fazil Harerimana, who presided over the event, said Rwandans should be identified by unity.

"We are all Rwandans and we should stand strong by upholding the truth about what happened in our country,” Harerimana said.

He encouraged students to override the effects of Genocide and aim higher to excel in their studies so as to play a role in their country’s development.
