KARONGI- A delegation from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Friday conducted a one-day official visit in the Western Province where mutual relations between Rwanda and its neighbouring country were discussed.
Led by North Kivu Deputy Governor, Feller Lutaichirwa Mulwahale, members of the delegation acknowledged that Rwanda had registered tremendous achievements in rebuilding herself.
The delegation, comprising of top government officials, toured farms to get first-hand experience of the implementation of modern agricultural methods used by farmers in Rustiro District.
Mulwahale and his team also paid a courtesy call to Congolese refugees at Kiziba Refugee camp where he promised support to all those willing to return home.
During discussions shortly after the tour, Mulwahale acknowledged that his country drew vital lessons from the fast-track development of Rwanda, both socially and economically.
"The rapid and outstanding development of Rwanda has so many lessons to offer to the rest of the world. We are also keen to learn and that’s why we came here,” Mulwahale said.
He pointed out that joint efforts are necessary to further improve diplomatic relations and cross-border security between the two countries.
Mulwahale congratulated Rwandans upon conducting peaceful elections last year and hoped his country will do the same during next November’s presidential polls.
The Vice Governor thanked the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) for their first aid response after a recent boat accident in which over 50 Congolese passengers are feared to have died.
Western Province Governor, Celestin Kabahizi, noted that smuggling of illicit drugs such as marijuana and illegal minerals are still a major challenge.
He revealed that last year, illegal drugs especially marijuana valued at over Rwf 800 million were destroyed and it is alleged that they were sneaked in from the DRC.
