KAMONYI- Two parents in Rugalika, Kamonyi District were, this week, rewarded for their exceptional efforts in promoting the education of destitute children in the area.

The district mayor, Jacques Rutsinga, handed each of the guardians a Rwf 100,000 cash reward, during celebrations to mark the Day of the African Child, at Kiboga Primary School.

The celebrations were also combined with the Family Day and the day dedicated to the fight against child labour. 

The guardians adopted abandoned children and have managed to raise and educate them amidst poverty and life’s ordeals. 

Serafina Mukabutera, 64, who managed to educate It is the motherly heart that drives me to respond to needs of suffering children a teenage boy up to completion of secondary education said:  ". I don’t do it for the rewards, but only to see a bright future for the child.” 

The administration of Kiboga Primary School also recognised two pupils, and offered each a heifer- part of a child care and educational promotion initiative. 

In the same spirit, a businessman, Jean Baptiste Habirema, committed to buy school uniform, for the best student in the school until he or she completes primary education. 

MP Alphonsine Mukarugema, who was the chief guest, hailed the laureates for their exemplary deeds.

She remarked that education was the basis of social and economic development and urged parents and the community to embrace it.

"Our children are our future. It is through the gift of education that we can ensure a bright future for the community,” she said.
