THE ongoing national photography exercise for the new electronic identity cards was on Tuesday extended to Gasabo District.

The exercise will last for six days in the city district instead of four, officials said.

A total of 256,032 people in the district registered last year for the new electronic IDs in all the 15 sectors that make up the district.

Gasabo followed after Nyarugenge and Kicukiro Districts, and it’s from there that the exercise will be taken upcountry.

The photography process is expected to end in August, with officials saying that all photographed Rwandans should have their national Identity Cards before the forthcoming parliamentary elections due later this year. A mini survey conducted at Gasabo photography sites of Kibaza, Kamutwa, and Kamatamu yesterday found out that many people had turned up.

Marie Rosa Dusabeyezu, the supervisor of the exercise in Kacyiru Sector, explained that people had lined up as early as 7a.m.

"We have been given six days because of the big number of people who registered (for national IDs) in this district," Dusabeyezu said.

She added that the photography exercise seemed to have gained momentum from the previous days when it had just started with more and more people showing up early enough.

A total of 9,043,580 people registered for the Cards nationwide.
