SECURITY has been beefed up ahead of Saturday’s Fifa U-17 World Cup opening ceremony at Estadio Morelos.

The Mexican police and army have been deployed at various team hotels, stadiums and training facilities.

Emergency medical rescue vans have also been stationed at all stadiums and hotels.

Hidalgo State police chief Damian Canales says that security for players and fans is top priority.

"We want the tournament to be a success and for that to happen, security has to be at its best.

Therefore, we urge everyone to be vigilant,” the official said.

A few days ago, there were security concerns after a rash of violent attacks linked with drug trafficking left many dead.

Over 38,000 people have died from the chaos across Mexico since President Felipe Calderon began using the country’s army to fight the drug cartels five years ago.

The World Cup will run from June 18 – July 10. The final will be played at Mexico City’s Azteca stadium.
