Gicumbi -A 45-year-old man in Byumba Sector in Gicumbi District was on Monday night murdered by unknown assailants. Jean Batiste Kanyarwanda, who was a security guard at a Pentecostal Church, was bludgeoned to death at around 9.00 pm as he returned to his home from work.

Police said Kanyarwanda was killed by thugs after he foiled an attempt to snatch a handbag belonging to a lady..In a Police statement, Angelique Nyiransabimana said a stranger accosted her as she walked home before attempting to seize her hand bag.
The deceased came to her rescue and during the scuffle that ensued, the attacker hit the deceased on the head before fleeing.
"When I saw Kanyarwanda collapse, I was petrified and fled while calling for help. Several residents responded but found him already dead,’’she narrated. She said the deceased may have been killed after recognising the suspects.
Police said that over 80 people were arrested for questioning. Among them were idlers, illicit brew traders and commercial sex workers.
Addressing residents who gathered at the district’splayground, District Police Commander, Bertin Rutsindura, urged them to always be vigilant.
"People should take security as their responsibility and report suspicious cases to police,” he said.
