KARONGI - Primary and secondary school students in Karongi and Rutsiro districts yesterday, undertook a road safety awareness campaign as part of activities to conclude the Road Safety Week.

The students flagged down motorists reminding them to observe traffic safety rules as they fixed stickers on vehicles and motorcycles.

"I am very happy and proud to take part in this campaign because many lives are lost as a result of road accidents,” said Placide Mushimiyimana, a form four student at the Teacher Training College in Karongi.

Just like the rest of the students, Mushimiyimana thinks that massive the awareness can help reduce road accidents.

During a discussion with the students, Karongi District Police Commander Supt. Gilbert Ruhorahoza urged them to also take a leading role in the promotion of security in schools.

"In addition to the traffic week we have just concluded, you have the obligation of ensuring that there is security in your schools,” Ruhorahoza said.

Meanwhile, road users including drivers and pedestrians are optimistic that the annual police campaign on road safety is not in vain.

"Such campaigns are always important to remind people that road accidents can be avoided by simply avoiding carelessness,” Theophile Mugenzi, a motorist in Karongi town said.
