Ngoma- A 16 year old school girl was arrested after police found her in possession of Marijuana.

The senior four student at Musya Secondary School in Kazo sector of Ngoma District, was detained at Nyagatare Prison, yesterday.Nyagatare Prison is a home to minor offenders.

According to Ngoma District Police Commander (DPC), Albert Gakara, marijuana smoking in schools is rampant.

He said that the girl admitted she liked marijuana because it made her feel good.

"That the suspect is above 14 is enough to prosecute her...She is one of those with juvenile criminal tendencies. We are on the alert because many students are involved in the habit,” he said.

Teachers began monitoring the suspects after getting a tip from a student who said that they smoke marijuana at a hide-out near the school.Only the girl was arrested but the others fled.

Patrick Ndahayo, a resident of Kazo, said that on his way to work, he passes groups of students who give out a scent of marijuana.

"Teenagers are at risk of developing serious alcohol and drug problems. Abusing alcohol and tobacco at a young age has negative health effects,” he said.

Ngoma Mayor, Francois Ntiyotwagira, said that the issue of drug trafficking and use in schools and communities needs consistent vigilance.

He said that all stakeholders should work with security organs and local leaders to curb the situation.

"Cannabis or Marijuana, is a big problem in our region...when it comes to students, everyone needs to wake up,” he said.
