The head of the United Nations mission in DR Congo (MONUSCO) on Thursday, told the Security Council that the weakening of the Democratic Forces for the so-called Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), is the main reasons for the improved security situation in the DR Congo.
FDLR has been weakened in the areas of North and South Kivu from where it has operated for so long, maiming, raping and killing defenceless civilians.
The rag tag terrorist group that is responsible for the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, has carried out crimes against humanity in the region that are unique by their level of brutality.
Several of its top leaders who had enjoyed impunity in European countries, from where they coordinated terror activities, have been arrested and are on trial.
The fact that they are out of operation, has facilitated the weakening of the terrorist outfit. Other combatants have put down their weapons and returned home.
The cooperation between Rwanda and DR Congo authorities has further facilitated this improvement in security in eastern DR Congo.
It is important to note that the total defeat of the terrorist group will guarantee regional stability and peace.
It is imperative that the remaining leaders of the FDLR are arrested and brought to book.
